Remembering Magnum

A look back at Heartland’s history would not be complete without remembering Magnum. A small lab mix puppy that was brought in after being found tortured and left to die in 2005, the team was unable to save his life. Julie Breault, Dr. Gary’s wife and practice manager for 20 years, used his story to inspire Kansans to fight for Magnum’s Law – imposing stricter punishments and making animal cruelty a felony in the state of Kansas. The Magnum Fund was created as donations came in to help pay for his medical treatment. Although his life was cut short, over the next 18 years, Magnum’s memory led to thousands of dollars being raised to help dozens of homeless, injured, and abused pets receive the care they needed to find safe, loving homes. Although the official Magnum Fund has now retired, generous members of our community still utilize giving through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation to support animals in need locally and around the world.

Our History

Heartland Animal Hospital and Play & Stay hasn’t always looked quite like it does now. When the brothers Dr. Gary and Dr. Bill Breault purchased the hospital in April 2000, everything squeezed into a building just half the size it is now. With just the two doctors and a small support team, Heartland Animal Hospital served pets and people in Bel Aire and surrounding areas with basic medical services, boarding, grooming, and “Dog Park”. Over the years, the practice was slowly growing and changing, adapting to the needs of our community, until in 2009 it became evident that an expansion was needed and in 2010, Heartland Play & Stay was born. Now with a team of 5 doctors and more than 35 skilled technicians, assistants, CSRs, and kennel attendants, we are privileged to continue to serve many of the same families that Dr. Bill and Gary were first introduced to 24 years ago.
